I Hate Diets

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

For years, I have been on a quest to lose weight. Well, that is not exactly true. Some of those years, I was trying to leave well enough alone. But the rest of them, I was definitely trying to get rid of bulges and bulk. And I have done a crappy job of it because I always focused on the diet and the dreaded exercise. I do hate diets. All they do is make you focus squarely on the losing. That does not work for long. But lifestyle. That’s another animal. Hey, I know that I have to change my lifestyle. That is usually the problem for everyone. When one likes the lifestyle they are in, it is extremely difficult to change it. Why? I thought that was incredibly obvious. They like it too much to give it up.

So, a person has to find a way to WANT to change. And it cannot just be about the weight. Know why? Because if that is your focus, sooner or later it will blow up in your face. You will hit the point that you don’t like what you are doing and that will be the end of it. Well, not really. Because once SOME weight is lost and you give up, more weight comes back. More than you started with. Believe me, I know that one.

I think the only thing I really have not tried are the diet pills. You know, things like Phentermine. It’s a prescription drug designed to take the weight off. I know they work. And they should be used with care and a doctor. The only thing my doctor ever tried with me, other than the usual weight loss diet sheets that NEVER work…ever…..were those all liquid diets. Those things are nasty. You get to sit and drink your drink while everyone around you eats all your favorite foods. Yeah, that one works….if you are a hermit it might.

Well, that’s great about those drugs but what happens when the prescription runs out? You do have to change the lifestyle but I think that you have to want to change it enough to change it for the right reasons. Health comes to mind. Not weight, HEALTH. Everyone knows that you cannot lose weight because someone else wants you to do it. Never works. But if you want to lose it for the sake of your family, that works. Not because they expect it of you but because you want to for them. You must want it badly enough so that you will be around to see your children grow up, to see your spouse for long years ahead. You must want it because it’s the right thing to do.

Take the time to seek out why you want to lose the weight. Find the best reasons, then find the helps that will guide you along. Maybe the help comes in the form of a new hobby or a new career. Okay, it could be a new someone in your life too. There are as many reasons to lose weight as there are not to do so. Go shopping!!! NO, do not max the credit cards out. Not that kind of shopping. Find friendly foods that are going to help you on your way to a better you!! It does work when you want it badly enough. Now, I just have to take my advice and work it.

We have someone living with us who is about to go into the army in a month or two. He is very interested in ways to build muscle so that his time will not be difficult when it comes to the very active military life. I do not blame him. On the other hand, I have no muscle tone at all. Sigh. Of course, it takes working on that to get any and that’s what I have not done.

It really takes a bit of effort in that area. I do plan on getting out and going walking as soon as the weather permits. So far, we have had rain, rain and more rain most days. Today might just have been the local exception. Anyway, if a person does want to build muscle, why not get out the exercise equipment and go for it!!

The truth is I have a huge weight problem. And a difficulty is that I am at an age that I need to get it under control and fast. Exercise is almost out of the question. My doctor does not talk about my weight. I suspect he has given up on doing that. It seems that the out-of-control weight I am wearing is just too much for him too. Sigh.

You know, I have tried some things to deal with it. I remember one diet plan that said I should go to the grocery store and only shop on the outside wall of the store. At that time, the stores had all their unprocessed foods there. The plan did not allow for using canned products of any kind. It was extremely hard to keep to that plan because there were things in the aisles that I needed. Eventually, I stopped going to the weigh ins. Not much happened there.

A doctor gave me a liquid diet. Unfortunately, at the time, I was an over-the-road trucker. It was extremely necessary that I keep my strength up and the liquid diet robbed me of that. I stopped that one when my partner, who weighed MUCH more than I, ate all his meals in the truck in front of me because he apparently resented me for reminding him of his weight through the diet I was on. I did not say a word to him but I did not like that guy one bit. I was so glad to be rid of him as a partner. YUK!

There have been others too. Some better than others like one of the carb counting diets which I would caution people to go on for short term only. I did lose some weight on that one but the best benefit was the lowering of my blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Yeehaw!!! Of course, that lasted until I left the diet. It did take about nine months before the old problems resurfaced.

Know what? It would appear that I haven’t tried a few other things like weight loss pills. Mostly, I have gotten so tired of trying to diet that I would rather just adjust my eating habits to be more body friendly. I think that would help enormously, don’t you? So, I have a new plan. Hopefully it will help me more than other things have. I really hate to lose some weight only to have it come bouncing back on and the scale reads higher than before. ACK!!!

I am going to admit that I hate exercise. Before I weighed what I do now, it was not so bad. Truly. There were days that I could do lots of walking. Walking was my friend. I loved to walk. But over the years, that has faded into the background so much that I just have not been able to do as much as before. And, of course, when you aren’t active, what happens? Weight gain. BAH!

Now, we do have some exercise equipment here. A stationary bike is sitting in what we call the playhouse. It’s a small building that houses some things we didn’t have room to put in the house. It also used to be where the our nieces would play in the summer. It sits in an area where it could be used….if someone wanted to use it. Then, we also have a treadmill. It’s great for hanging jackets on when there isn’t anywhere else to put them. Not bad, huh?

Yes, I need to exercise. No, I haven’t done much in the last few……weeks….uh, months. Yes, I do need to do that again. Will I? Probably when the weather gets to be a bit better. We have a cold snap on us tonight again. If I can get myself interested in exercise, I will probably talk my husband into walking with me. I used to love that. Maybe soon.

Those nasty words get uttered from time to time around us. You know what? I do exercise. I exercise my right to not have to do that. And diet is what I eat, not a life plan. But I have to admit that I do need to lose weight and to exercise. I am just resistant. But if I get any older and stay as “weighty” a proposition as I am now, ugh. Yes, there comes a time when even those of us who are dyed-in-the-wool resistors have to face facts. It’s either go up a size in clothes or do something to go downward. I should do that.

Then I hear this word thrown at me….”Orovo“. What the heck is that? Somebody mentioned it to me. I have no clue. Come to find out it’s a website with stuff like a weight loss product, muscle builder and acne product. Sort of an all around deal there. I know that I have to do something to get rid of an excess of weight. Exercise, muscle building wouldn’t hurt either. I could use a muscle or two. Right now, they look like they’re upside down! LOL! WOW! Too much information, right? Okay.
