When We Got DSL

Welcome back!

Things certainly changed when we got DSL. It took us about a minute to figure out that the computer was getting to places much faster than ever before. Of course, we were compared to the rest of the world, I imagine. Our area does not get new things as fast as the big cities do. Fast. There’s a word that cannot be used around here. Our phone company took it’s sweet time bringing in this service to us but we got it last year and, boy, did it make a difference.

We could not wait for the company to tell us we had DSL. It was set up and in place in a matter of a few days. Right before the day scheduled to turn the service on, we received a package in the mail. Turned out to be the Linksys router they sent us to replace the modem that we were using before with the dialup. I am so glad we no longer have the dialup. It was so slow. Now we found out that there is a speedier way to go but our area phone company does not yet offer it. Of course not. But it will. When it does, we will likely get it. But for now, we do have some pretty good connection speeds. And we are satisfied with that.

We have contemplated moving several times since we came to live in the house we currently live. Every time we do that, it occurs to me why I hate moving. For one thing, we are not the spring chickens we used to be. Years ago, it was a whole lot easier to move from one place to another. For another, we have no help whatsoever. We must do this ourselves. ACK!

For what it’s worth, I will move when we find just the right place, right price and the right location. I will hate the process but I will do the deed. At some point, I would like to have the money so that we could hire someone to do the moving for us. Now that is a wonderful idea well worth exploring. See, I hate to pack and move because packing requires all those shipping boxes be packed and labeled. And what happens? For some odd reason, I tend to forget what’s in them. It then becomes a trial and error system to find the one thing I knew was packed but not where it was packed.

If we had someone else packing and shipping everything, it would be even worse, don’t you think? I mean, at least if I had to pack it, there is a slight shot I would remember WHERE. If someone else does it, there is no possibility of me knowing and then it’s a mystery to be solved. Hey, I can live with that! Mystery. I like it. Let’s move. When can we get started?

For the last several months, gas prices have been soaring and going higher. They have been a serious problem for the economy of the county and for our pocketbooks personally as well. And now, for the first time this year, they appear to be falling. Our trip to Missouri the other day brought us to the gas station, Murphy Oil, in West Plains, Mo. The price there was $3.51 which is lower than I have seen it in ages.

What does this say to us about the price of gas this winter? Not sure but I am betting this drop in price will not last. However, while it is here we should take full advantage of it. Fill up as much as you are able. We did. The unfortunate part of that is that we used just enough gas to get there and when we filled up, it was just enough gas to get back. Growl. Had I known the price before we left, we would not have filled up at our regular station in Arkansas.

Still, the prices are down now and perhaps that will start to reflect in some goods and food prices at the stores. Let us hope that it will bring some of those soaring prices down. I do know that it took a while for the goods prices to go up. Hopefully, this will bring them down sooner. We can always hope, right?

Today my computer decided to crap out on me. When booting, it would not acknowledge that I had a monitor. Oh oh. This is serious. Well, it was. For the last I don’t know how many years, I have been running this computer with 384mg. of memory. It was fine. I did not see it as a problem at all. It was doing what I needed to do. Granted, it wasn’t doing more. But today, one of those memory sticks gave out. ACK!

As usual, I thought how personal that becomes when I need to do my blogging. I take my blogging seriously and it is quite personal. Even my griping is like that. So, I went on a hunt for more memory. And even though memory has come down drastically in price, not all of us can actually afford such things. Most of the ones I looked at were more expensive than I actually wanted to pay. I should mention here that I did not intend to just replace what died. I wanted to upgrade a bit.

Right now, my computer is running with 1- 128mg. stick. I have to tell you that I am so not used to my computer being so dog slow. Waiting for the browser to come up, I could probably have had lunch or it felt that way. Not sure I can stand this slowness for long. I know. WAAAA!! I would have said the same thing. This is my problem.

Then I went on eBay where I usually do not go anymore because of the fact that most things are not as cheap as they used to be even there. Yet, I did get a really good deal on a couple of 512mg. sticks for around $20. You cannot beat that with a stick……of memory, no doubt. Yes, they are new. I do hope they are not DOA though I believe they have a money back guarantee on their page. Once those show up, my computer will be faster than I have ever seen it. Oh yeah!! I like.

Well, I did not expect to make a list. It would be huge for those that I like. Those that I hate are a smaller list but definitely hated. In all of this, I enjoy food most of the time. When I was in the hospital, the food was not a great thing. In fact, I was probably losing weight so I did not need a diet pill to get the weight down. It was happening anyway. And I am sort of grateful now but at the time it was difficult to deal with. I was not feeling well and they gave me crap to eat.

That is a problem for me. You would think that they would want to feed their patients good food that would make them well again. But no. They do not want that. They want to be cheap even if you are paying the bills. Of course, that does not matter. Either you pay or the insurance, whatever kind you might have. Since they pay the bills, the hospital can slight the patient so that they can save money. At least that is my take on that particular little problem.

I just have to get this off my chest. And I am going to talk about my trip to the hospital because I cannot stand people who will not do their jobs right simply because it’s either more fun to do it badly or just being hateful. What am I talking about?

I was in that hospital for 4 days. During that time, I was treated like most people in that facility and became someone’s pin cushion daily. Yes, they wanted blood over and over. The first day, the lady was really good although I did get the expected bruises. She said it would do that. She took an amazing amount of blood in my right arm in two places.

Right before that, a nurse came in and put in a heplock. For those who do not know what that is, it’s the little device that allows them to hook you up to the IV solutions when necessary. Because I am a touch stick, they decided to put it in my right hand. I AM right handed so that was a bit unhandy, not to be handing out puns today. No really.

By Sunday night, I had already had three blood draws. It could have been more, I admit, but that was more than enough. Then the worst happened. The heplock slipped out. It meant that I had to endure another one being put in. The person who tried to do this had no idea how to do so and that hurt a lot. She did try to put it in in several places but to no avail. She finally got a person who actually had the capability to do it.

After that, I got moved out of that unit into a regular room. I had so many sore spots and places that were bruised that I could not stand one more. All day long, no one came to get any blood. I thought I was home free. That night or rather at 5:30am, some woman came into my room, said my name so loud that I am sure that the neighbors were awake too. Then she proceeded to snap on the brightest light in the room. Both my husband and I were very much asleep. And then we were not. Very rudely not.

This woman was so rude that I told her NO when she wanted blood. She did not ask. She was simply going to take it. NO!!! I SAID NO!!!

A person like that has no business, I said NO BUSINESS being in health care at all. She needed to be reported. I probably will do this. Does this person not have a clue that people are in the hospital???? That they are sick? Some are elderly. Is it possible to scare someone to death? I’m certain that is possible. And rude women like that do not belong there.

There. That’s my gripe session for now.

Want to finish that sentence? I don’t. Because I could come up with a bunch of things and people, most of which are or were not that brilliant in their actions. Some are simply clueless. You know who you are. There are others who are so involved in themselves that they have no idea about anything around them. I have people in mind for that too. But what I think is a real problem are those who say they want to improve their credit so they obtain a credit card, max it out and then cry because it didn’t work for them. Why? Couldn’t pay it back. Uh huh.

Also on that list would be those who had no credit but still did a dive into that morass of problems associated with the current mortgage crisis. I am not talking about those who were really great with payments. I’m talking about the people who are not interested in payments. They simply want the stuff or the mortgage so they can have the house for however long before they get caught.

Now, I do believe there are people out there who did the smart thing; wanted a house, researched, called the mortgage lenders and got a deal…at the time. Now it’s anyone’s guess what will happen next. If you find a good, reputable lender, you have a real prize. They will help you any way they can. If because of the current situation, you are in deep doodoo, the good ones will do all they are able to help you stay out of foreclosure hell. Thing is, these folks do not want the property on their hands any more than you want to lose it. So, get out there and contact your lender and see what they are able to do for you!!! Or you can sit on your can and wait for them to take it away.

People buy cars they cannot afford. The payments looked good at first but they can’t actually come up with that one payment in two months let alone one month. How about those students. The credit outfits go to the schools and get the students that just got away from home for the first time and put them into credit card hell. The student thinks it is okay to use the card but cannot pay it back on time. Ah, those wonderful interest payments keep a climbing.

Beyond that, there are those who get some credit, max it out…sort of like the credit cards and wallow in their financial problems. You can expect them to not choose to pay back all that. They did not get into it to pay it back. Thinking of some people right now. Heck, there are all sorts of folks like that. Most of the people who want credit will pay it back but the other ones are the folks who will mess it up for the rest of us who do want credit. It’s a lot harder now to get credit and that’s when you would think it’d be easier. Lenders need the people to borrow. But now, if you are even a slight credit risk, the answer is no!! Not just a no but NO!!!! Sigh. That’s the way it goes, I guess.

I was right about getting admitted to the hospital. On Friday after the doctor visit, we went into the hospital, my husband helping to take care of me and me being the patient that did not have the sense to tell the doctor sooner about that blasted bite. Believe me, I had a lot of time to think about what might happen the next time, if there is one. In fact, I had a LOT of time to think. We did not get out of the hospital until Monday afternoon.

You know, I got to thinking about what we had been doing to earn an income. If I was going to continue to be productive, as long as I was tied up without a laptop computer like I have been wanting for ages, I would have to take notes and work things out on paper. What a concept, huh? We did a lot of talking, some about blogs and some about other things like a small business opportunity or two. Some day, we might be able to pull that off IF I can stay healthy, if my husband can stay healthy and we can both get ahold of some laptops so that this particular problem will not exist again.

Having had all that time, we did not believe it was wasted having taken notes on all sorts of subjects. We wrote some material for blog entries as well. Take away the television and the phone and you have some time to yourselves. We did. It was not bad at all.

In the meanwhile, the spider bite is slowly going away. With all the antibiotics I was taking and am still taking, I cannot see how an infection could stand it. But it was pretty impressive when I did go to the hospital. Now, the red spots that were so hot are no longer there. Doc says the hole left in my arm will slowly close in about a week to week and a half. This is one experience I will never ever forget. And I am now going to go to battle against any spider that crawls across our doorstep or gets in however they do it. No more crawlies for me.
