If you are a dog lover and a doggie owner or know someone who has a dog, here is a great contest for you! I ran across this absolutely great blog called “The Chocolate Dog Blog” (I LOVE that title) and they have a contest running. I love contests so I checked it out. We have a brand new puppy so I am really interested in this as well as in the people at DogPause where the bowl comes from.

On the blog, you will see a video with a dog eating from one of the bowls and testing the thing. Looks good to me. DogPause has this new type of bowl that is especially for fast eaters. This slows those doggie wolfers down. If you want to see more about that contest, just go to “The Chocolate Dog Blog” and sign your little self up for the new doggie bowl from DogPause!

Regardless of what you do, the carpets in the house will need to get cleaned at some point, no matter what. I actually hate to do it for a variety of reasons. For one thing, it takes a while to get the things dry again. We have animals so that is more of a problem, especially with the new puppy we have. She loves to get into things, lots of things. Today, I have a new wound in my hand because of her enthusiasm. In fact, were she a child instead of a puppy, I would be having her go to a doctor for ADHD. I just know she is a hyper doggie. Wonder if they have meds for that.

I got off track here. We do need to get our carpets cleaned. But I cannot decide whether to just hire the local steam cleaning company or get one of those Ladybug steam cleaners and do it ourselves. We were thinking that doing it ourselves would save big bucks. Maybe. Depends on what our resident “puppy power” has in mind, I would say. See, puppy power has gotten into the trash, the bedrooms to get out her “prizes”, “booty” or whatever you want to call it. She has had a few “mistakes” too. But most of all, she reigns over the house with her toys and her fun with the cat. Did I mention that the cat is having a blast? Yep, puppy power loves to play…with just about anything or anyone. She drools on the carpet, plays there with her well chewed toys, too. Ah but there’s much more. Alas, I do not have time to tell it. Perhaps another time?

Our family seems to have birthdays almost every month of the year. Sometimes, there are multiple birthdays in one of the months. For those of us who would rather forget that birthdays even exist, it gets to be a major fun deal when circumstances make the celebrating of said birthdays bunched up all at once. Don’t know what I mean? Okay, I said this before but I can do it again. Besides, it’s getting funny now.

For instance, one member of the family has a birthday in March. But, say something happens..one of the younger set doesn’t have the money just yet to get said person a b-day present, then it gets delayed for a week or two. So, then there are two who have b-days in April. We actually have a breather in May. Well, you would think so anyway. But this year, the March person and both April people had to wait on the big b-day celebration for weeks now. Personally, I could live without anyone noticing that I had one at all. But…..they notice all right.

So, one day someone came to me and wanted to know what to get someone. I had no idea. In fact, I had run out of ideas all together. My b-day idea basement was out. Time to restock for Christmas!!! Sigh. And just as I mentioned that my b-day idea machine had left the building, somewhere way back in the back part of the house, I heard this screechy sort of voice saying “Hey, haven’t you ever heard of Bell and Ross? Nuff said!!! Get a clue!!” I was amazed, to say the least. Okay, I could have mentioned that but who knew that the very person who had a b-day coming up would be listening…more like being nosy I would say. Ah well, it is hard to keep a secret these days especially when the b-days are put off until another one gets gathered in. Yep, there’s one in June too!! LOL!

When I came across this contest at Simply Stating the Obvious, I figured out that it’s got a fantastic prize package. And you get the benefit of being able to see the new Andromeda Strain on AETN. It’s a two night television show called “The Andromeda Strain” which airs in High Def Monday, May 26th and Tuesday, May 27th from 9pm to 11pm ET/PT. You may remember the movie and the book by Michael Crichton. This is a four hour original A&E television movie.

Andromeda is reeking havoc again in a small town when a U.S. military satellite crashes into the street. Two people survive when the deadly Andromeda Strain is unleashed. Of course, the military gets into it, quarantining the area. And there is a nosy reporter trying to find out the truth. A great cast stars; Benjamin Bratt, Eric McCormack, Ricky Schroder, Andre Braugher, Christa Miller, Daniel Dae Kim and Viola Davis.

For more info on this new aetn event, please click on Andromeda Strain!

Hey, I forgot to mention the prizes:

If you haven’t read my blog in a while, you might not have seen the adorable new puppy we recently acquired. She’s a great pup, very enthusiastic about everything. Very smart. She is mostly trained to go outside now at 9 and a half weeks old. I am very happy with her…most of the time.

Let me tell you a bit about puppies that get into things they should not. We have retrieved a couple of flip flops, endless amounts of plastic wrap (in pieces, of course. We have no idea where she is getting that stuff), bits of fuzz, an old toy that our previous doggie played with about 5 years ago, assorted chewies (also from the other pet who died a few months back), a comforter and many other things. Yes, I did say a comforter. If we cannot get her to change her ways, and we intend to make that perfectly clear I can assure you!!!, then I will have to go shopping for down comforters again. I just bought a couple of them last fall.

This is getting serious. Not only has she decided to terrorize the cat because at 9 and a half weeks old she is much bigger than our kitty but she also gets into everything!!! Actually, this reminds me of the movie “Turner And Hooch” more than anything. And now I have to laugh! If you have not seen the movie, I recommend it. It is hilarious and so is our new puppy! A laugh is a good thing even when picking up the pieces. LOL!

You know, we bought some items that we were going to use in cooking…about 2 years ago. My Mom always likes to make a mincemeat pie or two for Thanksgiving or Christmas. She uses an alcoholic beverage in it. A couple of years ago, she had run out and wanted us to get her some more. She had a list. All of those items were to be used in cooking. Now, before you do the “yeah right” thing, that’s the truth. In cooking.

At the same time, we decided to venture into the area of cooking with alcoholic beverages as well. So, we purchased a bottle of wine and a pack of beer. In my younger days, I did enjoy a beer every now and then…well, maybe a tad more than that. But it has been many, many years since I had a drink of beer or any other beverage like it. My husband does not imbibe.

We purchased those items for the sole purpose of cooking with them. As you are probably aware, the alcohol burns off in the cooking but leaves the taste of the product intact. Well, like I said, we bought a bottle of wine..don’t get out the wine rack just yet. I think we will need a few more bottles of that before that happens. Maybe a beer rack or two. Nah. I doubt that we will need any of that. Why? Because over two years later we still have the pack of beer, one missing having given it to a family member. We still have the wine bottle intact, nothing missing at all.

I just don’t think we are ready to be big drinkers. But the cooking will be getting better IF we use any of it. Maybe some day.

If anyone has the idea that recalls are slow and not happening much, I can tell you that I receive information concerning massive numbers of recalls. I can only put so many here on the blog. There are definitely way more than I report to you. It would be in your and your family’s best interests to find the list of all the recalls that are happening here and in the other countries. It is a large list.

For the 15th and 14th, these are the ones that I have chosen to report on. Some of them will be almost a copy of the actual recall since there is so much info to be passed on. Here is a list:

1) Shindaiwa Corp. recalls BACKPACK BLOWERS. Voluntary recall. The fan can separate off and cause other parts to also separate from the casing. This causes the plastic parts to fly out of the blower and pose a hazard to people nearby. Injuries and lacerations are possible. At a previous time, these same blowers were recalled due to a fire hazard. There have been 13 incidents of injury. The model numbers involved are…Models EB8510 and EB8510RT. All models up to serial # 7014728 are included. Serial Numbers through February 2007 production (S/N 702XXXX) which are located on the side label. These machines are black and blue with a red and black label that reads, “EB8510, Shindaiwa.” STOP USING THE BACKPACK BLOWERS IMMEDIATELY!! For more information please contact Shindaiwa at (800) 521-7733 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.shindaiwa.com

2) T.J.Maxx/ Maran recall Squeeze Kids Girl’s Corduroy JACKETS. Voluntary recall. The children’s hooded jackets are being recalled due to choking hazard. Style number 4JZ642FK are printed on the care label sewn into the back collar area of the garment. The sweatshirts were sold in girls’ sizes small (7/8), medium (10), large (12/14) and x-large (16). Stop using the jackets immediately. Manufactured in China. For additional information, contact Maran Inc. toll-free at (866) 431-5698 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.Sqz.com

3) Manhattan Group recalls INFANT RATTLES. Voluntary recall. Choking hazard. The blue plastic end caps can break off making small parts and resulting in a choking hazard for small children. Sold at: Gift and specialty stores nationwide, mail order catalogs, and the Internet from September 2007 through April 2008 for about $15. Manufactured in China. Stop using immediately. Return the product to the store where it was purchased. For additional information, contact Manhattan Group toll-free at (800) 541-1345 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday or visit the firm’s Web site at www.manhattantoy.com

4) Maple Chase recalls Carbon Monoxide & Carbon Monoxide/Smoke Combo ALARMS. Voluntary recall. Alarm malfunction. They give out a false alarm that owners manual says to take it out of service leaving the person without the alarm. Product involved…FireX Branded 10000 Series Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms and 12000 Series CO/Smoke Combo Alarms. The recall includes FireX branded 10000 and 12000 series alarms with item numbers: 10000, 12000, 12000C, 12000-6, 12200, 12220, 12400, 12400C manufactured between June 1, 2007 and February 1, 2008. The date code appears on the back of the unit with a four digit year, three digit month followed by the day (ex: 2007JUN1 for June 1, 2007). Units with a manufacture date code prior to June 1, 2007 are not included in this recall. Manufactured in Mexico. Contact Maple Chase immediately to receive a free comparable replacement alarm and make arrangements to return their recalled alarms. Consumers should not take the alarms out of service until they receive the replacement alarm.

5) Bayer recalls remaining Trasylol DRUGS. Most are used to control bleeding during heart surgery. Contact Bayer for more information

5) Johnson & Johnson recalls Procrit/ Remicade/ Doxil DRUGS. Voluntary recall. A truck carrying those particular drugs was stolen. They are recalling the drugs in an effort to stop a customer from receiving mishandled and potentially harmful drugs. Health-care providers and patients who received those drugs from an authorized distributor on or before May 7 should consider the product safe for use, J&J said. We have a new puppy in the house. You may have already seen the picture along with our suffering boy cat. He is putting up with her “exuberance”. And she is adorable. Well, adorable when she is not getting us up at 2, 3, 4 or 5am, that is. We have tried to stop that nice little habit. It is getting to be thoroughly annoying to the max. For a while, pre-puppy, we had been getting some sleep. Before that, our aged doggie was needing out quite a lot especially during the night.

The problem is that our new puppy is very stubborn when it comes to changing her ways of doing things. Before she came to live with us, she was an outdoor doggie. We got her when she was about 5 weeks old so it wasn’t that ingrained in her, at least I didn’t think so. She is now almost 9 weeks old. At this point, she needs to change her ways or take out whole life insurance for her future, however brief it may turn out to be. GROWL! Seriously though, we do need to get her to stop waking us up. Most of the time, she just wants to play but some of it is to go out. We are unsure which is which so far. Sigh. Some day, we will have an animal that does not do things like this. Boy, will that one be boring!! ;)

We do live in a really rural area in the Ozarks. It is amazing that we have anything here at all. Some of the things we do not have are specialty clothes stores. None of them really feel we are worth the effort, I suspect. Major malls. Obviously the buyers of such places do not think it would generate enough business in our area. Big name companies. Same thing. The truth is that we live in a small community that has one great big store and not a whole lot more than that.

And I am certain that you know what store that is. The crazy part is that before I moved here, it was a sure thing that I didn’t see my friends until and unless I looked them up or they looked me up. I saw them at church, of course. But other than that, we simply did not go to the same places at least at the same time.

Then we moved here. And it is a strange phenomenon more or less peculiar to here, I do believe. I can go to the local grocery store and shop all day. No one knows me other than the cashiers that are used to seeing me. I can go to the local discount store other than Wally and it would be the same. In fact, I could probably go just about anywhere in the area and I would be able to shop or eat or whatever else without anyone recognizing me at all. But let me get within a few feet of the largest retail sales company in the world and what happens??? Recognition, that’s what. It’s almost like they have a GPS on me. I cannot believe that I can go there and, usually without fail, a member of the family or some friend will see me there and we start to talk.

Do not get me wrong here. I love my family and friends are hard to find….well, unless you go to Wally. They are pretty easy to find there, that’s for sure. Does this mean that everyone ends up at Wally? Yep. That is the one place where most things can be obtained, even in backwater Arkansas. ;) You can count on it and you can count on seeing everyone you ever knew there at one time or another or at least it seems that way. So, don’t do anything you wouldn’t want your folks to see and have fun!!!

Once again, the recall list is growing. Seems that every day more and more items are needed to be placed on the recall list, most unknown to the general public. So, in an effort to get the word out to more people, here are some items from the latest recall list:

1) Schnucks brand spanish olives, 5.7 ounce jars. Brand name Mario Camacho. The officials believe that some jars contain glass fragments. The jars were distributed to Tennessee and Mississippi. The code on the jars is UPC code 04131819003. If you have purchased that brand and size jar of olives, please return them to Schnucks for a full refund. If you have any questions, you can call 1-800-264-4400 for more information.

2) Ahart’s Market, Allentown, recalls ground beef with a sell-by date of May 9th. A styrofoam tray was accidentally ground up into a batch of meat. This is strictly for Allentown. Please return the ground beef trays to the store on Allen Street for a refund. The styrofoam, they say, will not harm you or your family.

Most of the rest of the recalls are for things overseas. I am not reporting those here because I feel that we need to see only those for the United States at this time. There will be more recalls in the coming days.
