It was my first car! And I loved it from the minute I bought it. At 18 years old and out on my own, I really had no idea of what a car should sound like or drive like but I bought the thing for $55. It would have been $50 but the guy who owned it couldn’t take the tow bar off. There was really no one who could advise me so I bought the thing thinking that if it didn’t work long, I would find another one. I was so naive then. But I was blessed.
The car was a 1956 Chevy Belair, painted black by a brush…I’m not kidding. The picture is a representation of what I had. As I said, mine was black. At the time, I thought it was pretty cool that it was so different. I laugh at that now but then it was fun. My best friend and I were traveling around the country sort of getting our feet wet in life. LOL!!
We needed gas practically from the moment I bought the car so I went to one of those full service stations which, at that time, was pretty much the only way you could get gas. The gas cost 19 cents a gallon for those who would like to time date this. ROFL!! Anyway, we had a small but really pressing problem. The guy with the gas hose had no clue where to put the gas. Neither did we. We spent the better part of a half hour looking for the way to fuel up. Nothing.
I was actually blessed again because the guy was pretty smart. He got on the ground, looked underneath the car and followed the gas line back to the gas cap. Seems that when Chevy built this particular model, they had a sense of humor. The cap was IN the taillight. Sigh. But after the first time, it was fun getting gas after that.
We had a great time driving all over the country in that $55 car. Eventually, it needed rings and valves. Even in those days, that was too expensive. I sold the car to my Dad for a dollar. My only regret is that I do not still have that car. The reason for this post? I saw one just like it today in someone’s yard. It made me want to buy it!!! It is for sale. Ah, the good ol’ days.
Happy Shopping!!!
